Car Stamps

On this page I give you some information on collecting Car postage stamps. This is a hobby which is not practiced by many people yet, although stamp collecting generally is very popular. Nevertheless I started this hobby many years ago. There are quite a few smaller countries that issue theme stamp series and in here a lot of car stamp series can be found too.

In my personal collection the nicest Car stamps are coming from Monaco. This mini state on the Mediterranean has issued a few larger series in the 1960s and 1970s of car stamps that are very, very nice. I bought these sets complete a long time ago and I have never seen these sets offered complete elsewhere since then:

  • oldtimers - 14 different stamps (undated, but issued in 1961)
  • racing cars - 14 different stamps (dated 1967)
  • luxury and sportscars - 11 different stamps (dated 1975).

Monaco also issued a single stamp almost every year in the 1950s and 1960s for the famous Monte Carlo car rallye. These are quite scarce and expensive too.
The next stamp block was issued in Finland for the winner of the 1998 Formula I grand prix season.

In the USA a very large car stamp series was issued in 1984 - 1985 and this could only be acquired through a subscription service. I still have the original magazine insert that was published to sell these stamps and although I never took a subscription I still have many stamps of this series, most are pairs of oblong stamps and there is even one TVR stamp in this set! The stamps were issued by various mini island states in the Caribbean: St. Lucia, Nevis, St. Vincent and Nanumaga-Tuvalu. The other TVR car stamp is from a recent issued series from Le Sotho. The red Convertible is a 3000 S model from Cambodja.

Recently I found another stamp with a TVR model on it, the Speed 12. It comes from the country Tadjikistan. I have not been able to get one for my personal collection yet but I would like to share a picture of this stamp which comes in a leaflet of 9 car stamps.

Since 2003 I possess a special thematic stamp catalogue with car stamps only. This catalogue is issued by Domfil from Spain and has 472 pages, illustrated in full colour and is very interesting for any collector of car stamps. The catalogue was issued in 2000 and has ISBN number 84-931230-6-4. Stanley Gibbons issued a similar catalog, which I have not been able to find yet.
